![]() Herbie Mann passed away on Tuesday, July 1, 2003 at age 73. The world of jazz is short a great member and Gabriel is taking flute lessons from the MASTER. Blessings to Herbie's family.
![]() Herbie Mann Photo Fun© Dean Hampton 2001 At the Folly Theater in Kansas City, MO on December 8, 2001, I had the great pleasure of shadowing their official photographer, Beverly Rehkop with my Olympus C-3040 Zoom digital camera. Ms Rehkop referred to the two of us as "high tech/low tech." My bet is that overall low tech would win just because she is a great photographer! My thanks to her for putting up with me and teaching me "how to shoot the Folly." Also a huge thanks to DougTatum (the mastermind behind the Folly's wonderful jazz series) for granting me permission to do this. And a great thanks to Herbie Mann and his quartet for being super people and fabulous subjects. Also to his wife, Janeal - a beautiful person inside and out.
![]() Here is the original photo with no correction or changes except for a white box around the area that I cropped for the rest of the photos. It was resized from the poster size resolution of the original shot (about 28" x 21"). (Note: All of these have been "dumbed down" a bit so that they will load to your browser a little faster than a "printable" version. These are resolution 72 dpi, highly compressed.)
![]() This is the original crop job. I did a slight bit of fine tuning once I had it sized. All of the rest of the shots used this as the original for change.
![]() In this one I used PhotoImpact 6 to convert to grayscale.
![]() Here a matt texture was added. Because of the low resolution for the web version of this the matt is rather washed out.
![]() Applied an emboss filter.
![]() Here I changed the color on the emboss, then added the original as an overlay to it and cranked the transparency way up on the original layer.
![]() Finally, how I felt about Herbie's performance this evening - just plain smokin!! |
